For the second year in a row I have volunteered for C Magazine’s annual benefit art auction. This year I was able get the day off because of Living in Color Day. A magical day dedicated to volunteering, courtesy of my employer!
The auction is always a night to remember mainly due to the panic toward the end (I run the registration table and have to make sure all the peeps get their art). Signing everyone in is the easy part, it’s making sure these lovely supporters get the pieces they bid on in an ‘orderly’ fashion. Easier said than done. Mainly because everyone is either half in the bag or something doesn’t match up = subtle chaos.
Despite all the hoop-la and the odd pretentious sod (or volunteers running around with their heads cut off) it’s one of my favorite times of year. The event is in support of one of Toronto’s longest standing international contemporary art magazines (see above). The writers, manager and editor, artist and curators are very talented people whose contributions inform and enlighten. Not to mention, it keeps me in the loop of what’s going on in the art world at large.
The auction was a complete success selling the majority of the works and raising 10% more than last year.
